Does PS5 Have DisplayPort?

In the realm of connectivity, DisplayPort holds a lot of respect. The majority of high-end gaming systems and monitors offer DisplayPort connectivity.

However, DisplayPort generally sees most of its use ONLY for PC. Gaming consoles and TVs haven’t yet adopted the DisplayPort interface thoroughly.

Hence, the short and simple answer to the question: “Does PS5 Have DisplayPort?” is a no. PS5 DOES NOT feature DisplayPort. It instead offers the HDMI 2.1 port.

PS5 Offers the HDMI 2.1 Port

PS5 offers the latest HDMI 2.1 port and it comes bundled with an HDMI Ultra High-Speed cable that is capable of supporting the HDMI 2.1 bandwidths.

HDMI 2.1 is the latest iteration that is capable of supporting up to 10K resolution at 120Hz.

PS5, however, is capped at 4K @ 120Hz maximum. While it CAN theoretically support 8K as well, there are no games capable of playing 8K given how taxing that would be on the hardware.

It should be noted that you CAN connect PS5 to a TV or a monitor conforming to HDMI 2.0 or 1.4, however, the display mode of PS5 will then get bottlenecked to the version of the HDMI port it is connected to.

The following table shows different HDMI port version and their rated resolution and refresh rate.

So Does PS5 Have DisplayPort?

PS5 Does NOT have a DisplayPort.

Why DisplayPort DOES NOT Make Sense for PS5?

As alluded to earlier, the DisplayPort mostly finds its uses in PC gaming-related applications. You will find dedicated graphics cards and gaming monitors offering the DisplayPort.

TVs, on the other hand, have not yet adopted the DisplayPort interface, particularly in the budget and the mid-range category. Only a select few expensive TVs such as the Alienware 55 OLED, HP Omen X Emperium 65, Asus ROG Swift PG65UQ, etc. offer a DisplayPort.

Since consoles are designed to interface with a majority of display devices from all budget ranges, it would be a shame for PS5 to have a DisplayPort instead of an HDMI that would connect only to a handful of TVs out there.

And the reason why having an extra DisplayPort along with the HDMI port is that it would unfrugal and illogical. It would add to the overall cost of the PS5 for the benefit of ONLY a few who can afford expensive TVs or monitors with DisplayPort.

There is Good News For DisplayPort Lovers Though

There is a happy ending to DisplayPort lovers, relatively speaking.

For starters, it should be noted that the majority of the monitors and TVs that DO feature a DisplayPort, also have an HDMI port. So connecting your PS5 should not be an issue at all.

However, there are many monitors that have an HDMI 2.0/HDMI 1.4 that does NOT support 120 Hz along with a DisplayPort that DOES support 120 Hz.

Take for instance the Benq XL2411P:

This monitor has an HDMI port and a DisplayPort

The HDMI port on this monitor ONLY supports 60Hz (60FPS) maximum, whereas, the DisplayPort can support up to 120Hz (120FPS).

Hence, you’d obviously want to utilize the DisplayPort on this monitor for your PS5 to experience 120FPS gaming.

If that is the case, then you can do so using Active HDMI to DisplayPort adapters.

Choose Active HDMI to DisplayPort Adapters:

There are two types of HDMI to DisplayPort adapters:

  • Active and Passive

When connecting your PS5 to a DisplayPort, you’d want to use an ACTIVE HDMI to DisplayPort adapter such as the Club 3D 4K @ 60Hz

4K @ 60Hz active adapters can work at 120Hz (120FPS) at lower resolution. Note that the Active Adapters have a USB connector for powering them.

When sending a signal OUT from the HDMI to the DisplayPort, active adapters are recommended. Passive can be used when sending out from DisplayPort to HDMI.

Active adapters are equipped with a built-in chip that actively converts the HDMI signal to a DisplayPort signal. They are more reliable, have a higher compatibility rate, and can support a higher refresh rate and resolution entailed by the HDMI 2.1 interface.
