The refresh rates and the display modes that PS5 supports can be a bit confusing to understand in the beginning, but they are actually quite straightforward.
PS5 supports 30Hz, 60Hz, or 120Hz refresh rates natively. So as far as the question of is 75Hz good for PS5 goes, it has a two-pronged answer.
The first is whether PS5 can support a 75Hz monitor at all. The answer to that question is a yes. PS5 will work with a 75Hz monitor.
The second part is whether PS5 will support the rated 75Hz refresh rate. The answer to that, unfortunately, is negative. PS5 will NOT work at 75Hz mode and will dial down to 60Hz refresh rate.
In the following text, I will explain this a bit further.
Display Modes Supported by PS5
There is a small set of display modes that PS5 supports and PS5 is actually quite strict with them. Meaning, PS5 has the display modes and the frame rates capped.
The following are the display modes supported by PS5:
- 1080 @ 30Hz – 30 FPS
- 1080 @ 60Hz – 60 FPS
- 1080 @ 120Hz – 120FPS
- 1440 @ 30Hz
- 1440 @ 60Hz
- 1440 @ 120Hz
- 4k @ 30Hz
- 4k @ 60Hz
- 4k @ 120Hz
Whether a game supports any of these display modes depends upon whether the developer of the game has enabled support for a specific display mode.
Note that the frame rate of the games is capped at either 30, 60, or 120 FPS depending upon what game you play, and this CANNOT be changed.
In other words, PS5 does NOT allow for anything higher than 120 FPS (i.e 144 FPS, or 165 FPS) and does not allow for anything in between INCLUDING 75 FPS.
Refresh Rate Vs Frame Rate
For those of you who are not aware. Refresh Rate and Frame Rate are related but they are NOT the same.
Refresh Rate is a function of the monitor. It entails how many times the monitor has the CAPACITY to refresh the image on the screen in a second.
Frame Rate is a function of the gaming console and its hardware. It entails how many frames the PS5 hardware is capable of rendering in a second.
If a monitor has a 60Hz, 120Hz, etc, refresh rate, then the hardware should be capable of pumping out enough frames in a second to utilize the refresh rate.
The more visually demanding a game, the harder it is for PS5 to maintain higher frame rates. It is for this reason that you may see many 4K games capped at only 30FPS.
Now PS5 conforms to the HDMI 2.1 interface and hence is capable of doing 8K gaming as well. However, there is ONLY ONE game that can work at 8K resolution, the Touryst.
So is 75Hz Good for PS5?
As far as the question of whether PS5 supports 75Hz monitor AT ALL, then the answer is a yes.
PS5 should be able to support a 75Hz monitor BUT only at a 60FPS cap. Meaning, it will not play games at the rated 75 FPS.
There is nothing you can do to enable support for 75FPS gaming (or even 144FPS or 165 FPS gaming on 144Hz or 165Hz monitors respectively).
The 75Hz Monitor MUST Have a 60Hz Display Mode for 60FPS
It is worth pointing out that PS5 will not automatically work at 60Hz mode on a 75Hz monitor. The monitor MUST have the specific 60Hz display mode as well to enable 60 FPS gameplay.
The display modes for the 75Hz Dell S2421HN can be seen above. You can see that this 75Hz monitor DOES have support for a 60Hz refresh rate and therefore should be able to support 60 FPS gameplay on PS5.
